Getting a bit anxious about Christmas gifts? Here's my take on online and offline gifts. You know your loved ones best, so choose wisely. Here is my personal selection of gifts that I know would make ME happy under the Christmas tree:

Pieces of art have and open door and free wall space at our place. Patrícia Koyšová just introduced a limited series of prints of her selected works (my favorite would be the one above. Or the last one.) The pieces are beautifully printed, signed and framed, only the hole in the wall is missing. At Diagram concept store I would go for the candles. Or the minimalistic jewellery. Despite my "no-jewellery" period. Or because of it.

Si.li are two Slovak artist, Simona Janišová and Linda Viková and they make beautiful ceramics. These day they opened up their studio to all visitors and present hunters, find it here.

At the Clinique store in Aupark they have the ultimate gift sets. They look like cakes. And smell beautifully!
V Clinique v Auparku majú prekrásne darčekové sety a kazety. Vyzerajú ako zákusky. A voňajú!

The only place in Slovakia where you can buy hats of the Slovak and at the same time very international brand bySju, is Slávica design store on Laurinská street. The hats are worn by Will.I.Am too. Go for them. And check out the amazing colours!

Just steps away is the Slowatch store where currently you can find the new collection of the young We Are Not Sisters label. You can also check it out here.

You probably already know the eco and stylish Uashmama bags. This year we might be using one of the paper bags as a Christmas tree holder. The biggest selection of the bags you can find at their Šamorín showroom. It is cozy and the girls might even make you coffee. Check it out here.

I love books about design and fashion and food. Not so good with the cooking yet, but it's coming. Hopefully. My last inspiration: this cooking book by Monika from the Lapetit blog. Yum!
Milujem knihy o dizajne, móde, fotke a jedle. S varením to až taká sláva zatiaľ nie je, ale bude. Dúfam. Moja posledná inšpirácia: táto kuchárska kniha od Moniky z blogu Lapetit. Mňam!

The summer academy of jewellery making is a chance to design and create your own jewellery. I hope to take part in 2017!
Letná akadémia šperku a možnosť vyskúšať si vyrobiť vlastný šperk je ďalší môj zážitkový sen, možno sa mi v 2017 splní!

Bicycle stories: Ivan

As a big fan of the preppy look, when choosing a bicycle, Ivan went for a classical American beach cruiser that he’s been having now for two years, riding the streets of the town of Trnava, to work, to the market, to the playground with his son or for a coffee run.

Ivan works as an art director and illustrator (check out some of his work below) in his own firm Provocation Bureau and what I am really curious about is his next venture: a brand of fashion accessories for men, like ties, bow ties, socks or belts (and with the goal to one day present the brand at the Pitti Uomo menswear trade show in Florence, pst! Keeping my fingers crossed!).  

Ako veľký vyznávač tzv. preppy štýlu, siahol Ivan po dlhom procese hľadania bicykla po type klasického amerického beach cruisera. Už dva roky na ňom jazdí po Trnave, do práce, na trh, na ihrisko so synom alebo na kafé do mesta.

Ivan je art director a ilustrátor vo svojej vlastnom štúdiu Provocation Bureau a čo mňa veľmi zaujíma, je jeho ďalší biznis plán: značka pánskych módnych doplnkov ako motýliky, kravaty, ponožky a opasky (s tajným plánom jedného dňa prezentovať značku na veľtrhu mužskej módy Pitti Uomo vo Florencii, ale pst! držíme palce!)

I love Ivan's fashion illustrations that are having a great success in the world, like being included in the last Great big book of fashion illustrations. Or the Cravatta Pelliano brand using his work for their last presentation at Pitti Uomo, and one of his illustrations you may find in the LePremier shop in Prague, and many more, as well as getting recognized by fashion insiders. Napriek tomu, že sme s Ivanom istý čas robili spolu na jednom projekte, netušila som o jeho módnych ilustráciách, ktoré sú fantastické (!), a celkom úspešne sa šíria do sveta. Boli zaradené napríklad do poslednej Great big book of fashion illustrations, značka Cravatta Pelliano ich použila na svoju prezentáciu práve na Pitti Uomo, jedna z ilustrácií je vystavená v pražskej predajni Le Premier a v neposlednom rade ide aj o uznanie fashion insiderov, ktorí sú na ilustráciách často vyobrazení. Moja obľúbená je asi tá s Nickom Woosterom, viac Ivanových prác si nenechajte ujsť na jeho FB stránke alebo webe. Pekný zbytok víkendu!

Mr. Karol Pichler, Bratislava via Rio de Janeiro

When I graduated from high school, as a present my mum gave me an intensive French language course (yeah, because that's just what you need after boiling your brain with studying for your closing exams.... still love you, mum! :-).
Since that course I forgot a lot of French, but I remembered one other student - a very elegant, at the same time extravagant and charming red-headed gentleman. Years and years later, about this spring, I was talking to Mária Štraneková about stylish Slovak men to shoot and a wonderfully simultaneous thing happened: I came up with the memory of this gentleman and she came up with the name Karol Pichler. Some time later during one of Mr. Pichler's trips to Bratislava we were introduced and half a year later we went for coffee.
I felt really humbled by the time spent together - Mr. Pichler is a Slovak visual artist living in Rio de Janeiro, a stage designer (among many he did the set design for YSL's exhibition in Rio), fashion designer and last but not least eat-art master (pst, if you look for him on Facebook, you can see his eat-art albums - and that's just what he does for fun!). We talked about his studies of painting and tapestry  in Budapest, teaching fashion design students in Bratislava, his passion for jackets, his collection of ties (the one here is his own design! it's built from stripes of leather and plastic splints that normally connect the price tag to a garment), his art, his love of food, traveling and life, as well as his up and coming collection of fashion pieces (the ties are already sold at the Museum of modern art in Rio, well Hello!). His web page is under construction right now, and I am under the impression and I honestly hope that this is not the last you've seen of him on this blog. Have a wonderful Wednesday!

Kedysi pradávno som od mojej maminy ako darček k maturitám dostala intenzívny kurz francúzštiny (lebo to je presne to, čo po učení sa na maturitu potrebujete, ehm.... mami, ľúbim ťa!). 
Odvtedy som síce veľa z tej francúzštiny zabudla, výrazne mi však v pamäti utkvel jeden "spoluštudujúci": elegantný a zároveň svojsky extravagantný, šarmantný ryšavý pán. Po nespočetných rokoch, asi túto jar, sme sa s Máriou Štranekovou rozprávali o štýlových slovenských mužoch, ktorých by stálo za to odfotiť, a stala sa krásne simultánna vec: ja som si spomenula na ryšavého študenta z francúzštiny a ona povedala meno Karol Pichler. Pár mesiacov na to, počas jeho návštevy Bratislavy, sme sa s Mr. Pichlerom zoznámili, a ďalších pár mesiacov na to išli na kávu. 
Za tú chvíľu s ním som naozaj vďačná: slovenský vizuálny umelec žijúci v Rio de Janeiro, scénograf (medzi inými tvoril scénografiu veľkej YSL výstavy v Riu), odevný dizajnér, tvorič nápadov a v neposlednom rade eat-art umelec (pst! ak ho vyhľadáte na Facebooku, uvidíte jeho eat-artové albumy, ktoré dokumentujú jeho tvorbu gastronomického umenia. A to robí len tak pre zábavu! Dovidopo!) Rozprávali sme sa o jeho štúdiu maľby a tapisérie v Budapešti, o tom ako v 80-tych rokov učil študentov odevného dizajnu v Bratislave, o jeho vášni pre saká, jeho zbierke kravát (tá na obrázkoch je jeho vlastný návrh! vystavaná z kožených páskov a plastových splintov, na ktorých obyčajne visí cenovka oblečenia), o umení, o láske k vareniu, cestovaniu a k životu. A o čoskoro hotovej vlastnej kolekcii odevov (kravaty z ktorej už predáva napríklad Múzeum moderného umenia v Riu, že haló!). Aj keď momentálne je jeho web stránka vo výstavbe, ja pevne dúfam, že ak všetko vyjde ako by mohlo, s Mr. Pichlerom sa na tomto blogu ešte stretnete. Krásnu stredu prajem!

Lost and found

Just recently I wrote about how I love to listen to people's dreams coming true. I had the same feeling while talking to Milosh Harajda, the young man partly responsible for bringing David LaChapelle's work to Bratislava, co-working on it with Pavleye Art and Culture, while Milosh was the moving and emotional force behind the project. David's balancing on the verge of popculture, art and religion has always resonated with him. And even though my personal photography aesthetics lie somewhere else, I was honestly impressed by LaChapelle's execution of the photographs (his sets are real and live, not 3D, a little miracle in this age of post-processing...), the mystery of things and events happening or changing in a way he photographed them (true story :-) and his personal views on this world, on photography, art, love and life, that I was lucky enough to listen to recently.
Whether you love or hate LaChapelle's work, fact is that having his exhibition in Bratislava is a great thing (just ask the people at the GMB gallery, the place is crowded like a shopping mall all the time... how fitting :-) The exhibition is extended till the 15th of November, last day up to 8 p.m. More information here. Nedávno som písala o tom, ako mám rada príbehy ľudí, ktorí si plnia sny. Podobné pocity som mala aj pri rozhovore s Miloshom Harajdom, mladým mužom spoluzodpovedným za výstavu Davida LaChapelle v Bratislave, ktorú zastrešila agentúra Pavleye Art and Culture.  Emocionálnou a ľudskou hybnou silou projektu bol však práve Milosh. Davidove balansovanie na rozhraniach popkultúry, umenia a náboženstva mu bolo vždy blízke. A aj keď moja osobná estetika fotografie je troška iná, fascinuje ma remeselnosť exekúcie LaChapellových fotografií (ich prostredia a kulisy nevznikajú v 3D, ale sú reálne postavené, čo je v tejto postprocesovej dobe malý zázrak), mystérium toho, ako veci, ktoré fotografuje, sa časom udejú, pominú alebo sú inak predznamenané v jeho tvorbe (true story :-) a jeho pohľady na svet, fotografiu, umenie, lásku a život, ktoré som mala to šťastie si dávnejšie vypočuť.
Či už LaChapella milujete alebo nemusíte, faktom je, že mať jeho výstavu v Bratislave je skvelé (spýtajte sa ľudí z galérie, majú tam plno ako v nákupnom centre... aké výstižné :-) 
Výstava je predĺžená do 15. 11., posledné dni do 20.00 hod. Viac info tu. Nech sa ľúbi, ak sa ľúbi!

This Friday, in Stupava (in a beautiful synagogue!). I have seen a little preview in Jakub's studio, so funky! Love the idea (paintings of awkward moments of models during fashion shoots, combined with the shots that made the cut) and love Jakub. So, who's going?

Tento piatok, v Stupave (v nádhernej synagóge!). Naživo som v Jakubovom ateliéri nakukla do "kuchyne" a je to funky! Výborný nápad, aha (maľby nevydarených momentov modeliek počas fotení módy, kombinované s fotkami z tých fotení), výborný Jakub. Kto ide?

Invitation: BLAF 2011

And here it is - the final visual of the BLAF 2011 as shot by Peter Spurný. I am looking forward seeing it around town :-)
The festival itself will take place from the 30th of September until October 5th, 27 galleries will be participating, including an opening concert, open air cinema, BLAF_STYLE fashion show with young Slovak and international designers and brands participating, BLAF market, workshops, performances and other good stuff. Be sure to check out the BLAF webpage that will be updated with the programme. Bratislava is alive with art, oh yes!

A tu to teda je - finálny vizuál festivalu BLAF 2011 fotený Petrom Spurným. Teším sa, až ho uvidím po meste, najmä na priečelí SNG :-)
BLAF bude trvať od 30. septembra do 5. októbra a zúčastí sa ho 27 galérií. Dominika, Pohoda festival style

 

If there is one thing you can be certain of, it is when meeting someone at Pohoda you say bye with "see you around", you'll never bump into them again. This year I met a friend randomly for 3 times, and at the last encounter she said "see you later". That was it, haven't seen her for the rest of the festival.

Same rule goes for spotting someone to photograph, but at that very moment you: a, are standing in the line for fresh falafel/pancake/coffee/shower/silent disco and can't possibly leave your place/falafel/pancake/coffee/shower/silent disco, hey, you're only human b, standing in the middle of a dancing crowd and there is no way that person is going to leave the crowd with you just to have their photograph taken, you crazy lady, c, are just plain lazy running after them across in the heat and loose them in the crowd.
C was right when from far away I spotted this beautiful dress, the yellow bag, red headpiece and soft hair flying in the air. I was sitting on the grass, trying not to move too much in the heat. And pufff, she was gone. Luckily, every rule has and exception. Later that evening the dress, bag, headpiece and hair reappeared in front of me out of nowhere and my happiness was topped when I realized it is Dominika, the young painter you have already seen on this blog here.

Ak je jedna vec, ktorou si na Pohode môžete byť istí, je to pravidlo, že ak niekoho stretnete a lúčite sa slovami "však sa ešte vidíme", už sa na letiskový betón neuvidíte. Tento rok som trikrát náhodne stretla kamarátku a keď sme sa po tretíkrát s ľahkosťou lúčili, povedala to osudové "však sa ešte vidíme". Nebudem vás napínať, do konca festivalu sme sa už nestretli. Abrakadabra šuvix.

Rovnaké pravidlo platí, keď zbadáte super fotografický objekt, ale práve: a, stojíte v rade a už-už máte svoj čerstvý falafel/palacinku/kávu/sprchu/silent disco na dosah a v tej chvíli neexistuje, aby ste opustili svoje miesto/falafel/palacinku/kávu/sprchu/silent disco, ste predsa tiež iba človek b, stojíte uprostred tancujúcej masy pod stageom a je vylúčené, aby vyhliadnutá osoba s vami opustila svoje miesto, len aby ste si ju mohli odfotiť, však nie sú všetci rovnako šibnutí c, čistá lenivosť vám nedovolí rozbehnúť sa cez letisko v horúčave a objekt stratíte v nedohľadne. 
C bolo správne, keď som v diaľke zahliadla kvetované šaty, žltú kabelku a červený kvet v jemne vejúcich, mäkkých vlasoch. Práve som sedela na tráve, bez pohybu, aby som negenerovala väčšie telesné teplo. A tak pufffff, zmizla z dohladu. Našťastie, každé slušné pravidlo má svoju výnimku. Neskôr večer sa zrazu predo mňou znenazdajky vynorili šaty, kabelka, kvet aj vlasy a navyše som s radosťou zistila, že to je Dominika, študentka maľby, ktorú ste už na tomto blogu mohli stretnúť tu, aha.  
Takže, vidíme sa budúci rok, nie? :-)

At Orange Art of Taste

 

 

It was like an Alice in Wonderland dream... Except that in reality, it was "Tonbo at the Art of Taste evening organized by Orange, in the courtyard of the Slovak National Gallery". End of title. But it felt magical nevertheless. Fantastic food (cooked by Emanuel Ridi, the charismatic Italian chef that somehow didn't make it into my photos, but only because there was sooo much to see :-), a funky colourful exhibition of Lenka Sršňová's models, a table full of goodies illustrated by Michaela Chmeličková, with knitted tarts (and cute knitted animals laying in the grass) by Renáta Ormandíková, porcelan cupcakes by Linda Viková, plastic chocolate sweets by Mira Podmanická, art all around exhibited by Erik Binder, a fashion performance by Boris Hanečka (performed by the Slovak National Theater's Ballet soloists - and it was so unexpected, fresh and beautiful!) and finally a dose of music heaven by Jazzanova. All paired with pink champaign that tasted like strawberries (I swear it's true, real strawberries). No wonder all the colours, tastes, sounds, smiles and lights blend into a memory of celebration of art and taste. Thanks to Natália and Tomas for the invitation!

Na jeden večer som sa cítila ako Alenka v Ríši divov... Síce v realite by sa večer volal "Tonbo v Ríši Orange Art of Taste eventu, organizovaného na nádvori Slovenskej národnej galérie", koniec názvu. Ale čarovné to bolo rovnako. Fantastické jedlo (áno, začíname jedlom. Varil Emanuel Ridi, charizmatický Talian, ktorý sa mi nejak nedostal do hľadáčika, ale iba preto, lebo bolo nadmieru vizuálnych podnetov), veselá, farebná inštalácia šiestich modelov Lenky Sršňovej na tému jedlo, stôl plný dobrôt: s dizajnom prestierania od Michaely Chmeličkovej, so štrikovanými tortami (a štrikovanými zvieratkami pohodenými v tráve) od Renáty Ormandíkovej, porcelánovými koláčikmi Lindy Vikovej a plastovými čokoládovými bonbónmi Miry Podmanickej. Celé to bolo preložené inštaláciami Erika Bindera, módnym performance z dielne Borisa Hanečku (ktoré predviedli sólisti Baletu SND - a ktoré bolo tak neočakávane svieže a krásne!) a funky hudobnou nádielkou Jazzanova. Všetko to doplnené ružovým sektom s príchuťou jahôd (prisahám, čisté jahody!) a atmosférou letného večera, tak sa mi nedivte, že všetky farby, chute, zvuky, úsmevy, svetlá a obrazy krásne splynuly do sna na spojenie umenia a chutí. Ruka hore, noha v (štrikovanej) torte! Ďakujem Natálii a Tomášovi za pozvanie :-)
