At Bety's exhibition

The Bety K. Majerníkova's exhibition has been prolonged until the end of October, and is open every day except Moday, from 4 to 6 p.m.
A few pictures from the opening and its end, that was hard to describe with words, so I am not even goint to try... One little detail I did not realize until someone told me: if you want to see all the jewellery pieces installed in the floor of the former swimming pool, you have to bow down to each of them.

Výstava Bety K. Majerníkovej bola práve predĺžená až do konca októbra, a otvorená každý deň okrem pondelka medzi 16.00 a 18.00.
Pár fotiek z otvorenia a jeho konca, ktoré sa nedajú slovami opísať, takže sa o to ani nebudem pokúšať... Malý detail, ktorý som si neuvedomila, až kým ma na to neupozornila kamarátka: ak si chcete zblízka prezrieť všetky šperky inštalované v podlahe bývalého bazéna, musíte sa pred každým pokloniť.

Fringe time, Prague

A blond and black fringe as taken at Designblok in Prague. And my favorite black beret again (no, I still don't have one though...) Fringe seems such an autumn thing to me right now. Keeping your thoughts and dreams warm :-)

Blond a čierna ofina, počas Designbloku v Prahe. A návrat opakujúcej sa obľúbenej čiernej baretky (nie, ešte stále takú nemám...) Ofina mi momentálne príde taká krásne jesenná záležitosť. Na udržanie myšlienok a snov v teple :-)

In the detail: about details

One of the portraits taken at Designblok in Prague. This lovely girl was looking after one of the rooms with jewellery. Pretending I really want to photograph her earrings, I couln't resist to take her picture. I found her mesmerizing and looking back at the picture it made me think: what is it that visually draws us to certain people? A picture-perfect smile or strange little dumplings in the cheeks? A sparkle in the eyes or an immaculately kept eyebrow? The very latest oh-so-trendy pieces of clothes or a way a person stands or moves? Or all of that together?
I think sometimes we tend to over-analyze ourselves, we tend to look at ourselves purely through scrutinizing every little detail, and I mean every freaking little freckle, wrinkle, piece of hair or shape of nose... not seeing the whole picture, the whole beauty of ourselves, the emotions and energy that we inevitably put out there and that are felt by others. And who am I kidding, I am talking to myself here as well, let's be honest, okay? And I know this is the kind of world we live in today. A sparkle in the eye is hard to touch or buy, while you can purchase a set of make-up brushes for only 4.99. I am not saying it won't make you feel more beautiful, it is just that sometimes we tend to forget that too many perfect details can perfectly cover up your beautifully un-perfect and preciously unique self.

Jeden z portrétov z Designbloku v Prahe. Toto milé žieňa malo na starosti jednu z miestností so študentským šperkom. Pod zámienkou túžby odfotiť si jej náušnice som neodolala, a fotila ju. Prišla mi úplne čarovná, a spätne vo mne jej fotka vyvolala otázku: čo nás vizuálne priťahuje na niektorých ľuďoch? Dokonalý úsmev alebo smiešne jamky v lícach, keď sa niekto usmeje? Iskra v oku alebo podľa manuálu upravené obočie? Kúsky oblečenia podľa posledných trendov alebo niekoho telesný postoj a chôdza? Alebo všetko toto dokopy?
Mám pocit, že niekedy sa príliš analyzujeme, máme tendenciu posudzovať seba cez malé detaily, cez každý nechute malý detail pehy, vrásky, vlásku, nosa... A často tak nevidíme celok, celkovú krásu osobnosti a energiu, ktorú nevyhnutne dávame von, a emócie, ktoré vyvolávame. A buďme úprimní, hovorím tu aj do vlastných radov, haló... A viem, že to je aj podivuhodnými momentami sveta, v ktorom dnes žijeme. Iskra v očiach sa ťažko definuje, uchopí alebo kúpi, zato sadu štetcov na make-up kúpite už od 4.99. A bacha, nehovorím, že tá sada vám nepomôže cítiť sa lepšie vo svojej koži. Asi iba hovorím, že máme často tendenciu zabúdať, že príliš veľa dokonalých detailov dokáže tak dokonalo zakryť naše krásne nedokonalosti a vzácnu jedinečnosť.
Tak, koniec zadumanej chvíľky, moji jedineční a krásni priatelia, viac momentiek z Dizajnbloku už čoskoro. Pekný deň!

The boy who designs, Bratislava

Meeting Juraj Straka was an old wish of mine. A young man from Bratislava, designing patterns for the likes of Rochas, Yves Saint Laurent, Dries van Noten, Costume National, Versace or Lanvin, I had so many questions!
Talking like one crazy workaholic to another, all questions got answered and the success story revealed. As one of his high school professors said at the beginning of high school to his 15-years old students, about 10% of success is talent. The rest, hard work. You tell that to a young cocky guy just admitted to school because of his talent :-)
Then, while studying fashion design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava, his closest pal was designer Lenka Sršňová and they supported each other through school. As Juraj says, he is thankful for studying in Bratislava. Had the school been too perfect, he would never have had the drive to enter international contests, trying to get scholarships and opportunities to study and work abroad. At one of those international contests that they entered together with Lenka, they both finished in the top 3, which opened doors for him, resulting in an intership offer at the textile company Bucol in Lyon.
Now imagine you are sitting in your new office a few steps from a storage space with textiles and patterns dating back to the 17th century! The most amazing feeling? Seeing your designs turn into clothes, seeing them in editorials, on catwalks, on the red carpet, and I am talking Julianne Moore wearing the design you had hand painted sitting on your seat in Lyon, pffff....
We made a deal with Juraj and you are our witnesses. Once he will be the head-designer at a big international fashion label, I am invited to come and visit him with my camera. Now keep your fingers crossed for both of us, now!

S Jurajom Strakom som sa chcela stretnúť už dávno. Mladý muž z Bratislavy, ktorý navrhuje vzory látok pre značky ako Rochas, Yves Saint Laurent, Dries van Noten, Costume National, Versace alebo Lanvin, mala som naňho toľko otázok!
A tak sme sa rozprávali, ako workoholik s workoholikom, a všetky otázky boli zodpovedané a príbeh úspechu odhalený. Ako to pomenoval jeden z Jurajových stredoškolských profesorov na začiatku štúdia na strednej škole: 10% úspechu je talent, všetko ostatné tvrdá práca. Jasné, hovorte to 15-ročnému sebavedomému výrastkovi, práve prijatému na základe talentových skúšok :-)
Potom, počas štúdia módneho návrhárstva na VŠVU bola Jurajovou najbližšou spolužiačkou Lenka Sršňová, s ktorou sa navzájom podporovali a hecovali. Ako Juraj hovorí, je vďačný za to, že študoval práve v Bratislave. Ak by bola škola bývala príliš dokonalá, nikdy by ho to nenakoplo a neťahalo prihlasovať sa do medzinárodných súťaží s snažiť sa dostať na stáže. Na jednej z takých medzinárodných súťaží sa spolu s Lenkou umiestnili v top 3, čo mu otvorilo dvere, a v konečnom dôsledku prinieslo ponuku na stáž v textilnej spoločnosti Bucol vo francúzskom Lyone.
A teraz si predstavte, že sedíte vo svojej novej práci, len pár metrov od krásne usporiadaného skladu látok, vzorov a vzoriek, ktoré siahajú späť do 17. storočia! Ešte lepší pocit? Vidieť šaty ušité z vašej látky v editoriáloch, na mólach, na červenom koberci, veľmi konkrétne napríklad Julianne Moore v šatách so vzorom, ktorý ste ručne maľovali sediac na svojej stoličke v Lyone.
Na záver sme s Jurajom uzavreli dohodu, a vy sa práve stávate našimi svedkami. Raz, keď bude Juraj šéfdizajnérom látok pre veľkú medzinárodnú značku, som pozvaná na návštevu aj fotoaparátom. Tak nám teda obom držte palce, od-té-raz!

Čo by ste si predstavili pod módnou kolekciou s názvom Magika Fantastika? Je to nová kolekcia Lenky Sršňovej, prehliadka bude vo štvrtok, tu! Spolu s inými odvážlivcami som si dovolila tipnúť si. Že biologický kabinet, haha!

A tu si možno niečo dizajnového nakúpite, slovenský online shop. Ja zvažujem tieto farebné závesné žiarovky práve.

3. Slovak born, London based fashion photograher Miro shoots street style as well, check out his LFW pictures. Have a beautiful Sunday, in Bratislava the sun is out, so don't sit in front of your computers!

Invitation: Bety K. Majernikova exhibition

This is how the old, abandoned Grössling swimming pool looked today (Wednesday), just 24 hours before the opening of the special tribute exhibition of Bety K. Majerníková's jewelry, put together by her friends and supporters. 
As a kid, I took my first swimming lessons here, as did many kids in Bratislava, not realizing its visual and historical value while fighting with our first tempos. Today it is empty, broken down and closed to the public's eye, but with a strong genius loci. 
It was Bety's dream to have a big exhibition here one day, and her wish shall be fulfilled. Opening today, on Thursday, it will be on for two weeks (info here), and you are all very welcome to celebrate the a very special person in a very special place.

Takto dnes (v stredu) vyzerali staré, opustené kúpele Grössling, len 24 hodín pred vernisážou špeciálnej výstavy šperkov Bety K. Majerníkovej, ktorú dali dokopy jej priatelia a podporovatelia. 
Ako mnohé iné deti z Bratislavy, aj ja som sa tu učila splývať a hltala chlórovanú vodu, neuvedomujúc si estetiku historického miesta. Dnes sú kúpele Grössling prázdne, zničené a zavreté pred verejnosťou, stále si však uchovali neskutočný genius loci. 
Bety vraj túžila mať jedného dňa svoju veľkú výstavu práve tu, a jej prianie sa dnes splní. Výstava potrvá dva týždňe (info tu) a vy ste s úctou pozvaní osláviť výnimočnú osobnosť na výnimočnom mieste.

Schwarzkopf Fashion Talent, Bratislava

A quick post from this year's Schwarzkopf Fashion Talent, a competition that has given chances to some of the most talented designers (past winners include Boris Hanečka, Martin Hrča, Mária Štraneková, Milota Krajinčáková and Aďa Pojezdálová). Joining the ranks is this year's winner (my favorite from the beginning), Michaela Mazalanová. And although I personally prefer some of her simpler stylings, this hobo chic version with mostly male models was a fun twist to the show :-)

Rýchly post z tohtoročného Schwarzkopf Fashion Talentu, súťaže, ktorá dala priestor mnohým talentovaným dizajnérom (víťazmi boli už Boris Hanečka, Martin Hrča, Mária Štraneková, Milota Krajinčáková a Aďa Pojezdálová). Práve sa k nim pridala tohtoročná víťazka Michaela Mazalanová (pre mňa jasný favorit od začiatku). A aj keď mne osobne sedia jej jednoduchšie stylingy, táto hobo chic verzia s prevažne mužskými modelmi bola krásne svojská a vtipná :-)

It was just like yesterday - talking to the ever charming and stylish Slava (whom I thank for bringing my White shirt photo series to a little exhibition in Košice) about her plans taking Košice and its designers to a Pop up event in Bratislava. And here we are: the Made in Košice event will be held this Tuesday in Bratislava. See you there!

Bolo to takmer ako včera, keď sme sa so šarmantnou Slavou (ktorej ďakujem za zorganizovanie výstavy série Bielych košieľ v Košiciach) pri káve rozprávali o plánoch doniesť košických dizajnérov na Pop up večer v Bratislave. A ta-dám, je to tu: večer Made in Košice tento utorok v Bratislave. Vidíme sa!

1. One of the designers is Ela, the milliner of third generation and her hats, that I have already mentioned on the blog.
Jednou z účastníčok bude aj Ela, klobučníčka tretej generácie a jej klobúky, ktoré som už raz na blogu spomínala.

2. Mom-bloggers are a big thing for example in Germany or the U.S., and there are many ways to do a blog based on that. One of the first local examples is Mom-a-porter: Eva and her point of view on life, love and style, have a nice read :-)
Mom-blogy alebo blogy písané mamami sú veľmi silná skupina blogerov napríklad v Nemecku alebo USA, a je mnoho rôznych spôsobov ako túto tému uchopiť. Jednou z prvých lastovičiek u nás je Mom-a-porter: Eva a jej pohľady na svet, lásku a štýl, nech sa dobre číta :-)

3.  Just got back from Prague's Designblok, it was full and intense, will share the best of what I found, like the brand MUSET of Pavel Ivančic and its perfect, perfect tailoring! Have a wonderful Sunday, I am going to catch up on my sleep :-)
Práve som sa vrátila z pražského Designbloku, bol to krátky, ale intenzívny výlet, postupne sem dám to najlepšie, čo som objavila, ako napríklad značku MUSET Pavla Ivančice a tie dokonalo, dokonalo navrhnuté a ušité kusy! Krásnu nedeľu vám, ja idem dospávať! :-)

Lenka, winner of the outfit contest with Redd's

It was my pleasure to meet and shoot Lenka, winner of the Redd's outfit competition (one of her prizes was a little photo shoot with me). In the competition she put together a "picnic in Central park" themed outfit which stood out among all the others with its inspiring mood board and timeless, gentle feminine style. She came to the shoot wearing a very similar style of a fairy-like white dress, turquoise and metalic accessories. It was a lovely morning, starting with coffee, catching the last summery weather before and autumn rain shower, walking around Kalvária and a can of Redd's. Enjoy!

Potešenie bolo na mojej strane, keď sme sa stretli s Lenkou, víťazkou súťaže Redd's, v ktorej sa vytvárali outfity na motív New Yorku (a jednou z cien bol malý "fotošút" so mnou). Lenka vyhrala s outfitom na tému "Piknik v Central parku", aj vďaka perfektnému moodboardu a nadčasovému, jemnému, veľmi ženskému štýlu. Na naše fotenie prišla presne v tom istom štýle, vo vílovo nežných bielych šatách s tyrkysovými a lesklými doplnkami. Bolo to veľmi príjemné dopoludnie, od rannej kávy, vychytenia posledného teplého letného dňa pred jesennou búrkou, túlaním sa po Kalvárii a plechovke Redd's. Nech sa ľúbi!
