Dress for a muse by Andrea Pojezdálová

For the sixth year in a row a young designer gets the chance to design a one time only dress that is worn by the host of the Tatra banka Foundation Art Awards ceremony - Adela Banášová. It is one of the ways the Foundation continuously supports art and design. This year the designer of choice is the just graduated Andrea Pojezdálová, and I was there to follow the process with my camera.
Andrea chose the dress to be a reflection of her collection Persephone. She wanted Adela (who basically works through the night while wearing the dress) to feel free, light and beautiful in it. This idea is also supported by simplicity in shape: clean lines and the lightness of the material, all inspired by the Art Deco movement. The final colours - white and gold - reflect the celebratory feel of the night.

Už je to šiesty rok, čo mladý dizajnér dostáva šancu vytvoriť autorské šaty na jedinečnú príležitosť a pre jedinú osobu: moderátorku večera Ceny Nadácie Tatra banky za umenie, Adelu Banášovú. Je to jedna z foriem, ktorou Nadácia systematicky podporuje dizajn a umenie. Tento rok padla voľba na čerstvú absolventku módneho dizajnu, Andreu Pojezdálovú, a ja som bola s fotoaparátom zasa raz pri tom.
Andrea pri tvorbe šiat vychádzala z vlastnej tvorby, konkrétne kolekcie Persephone. Chcela vytvoriť šaty, v ktorých by sa jej nositeľka, ktorá v nich vlastne celý večer pracuje, cítila voľná, bez obmedzení a vynikla jej prirodzená krása. Tento zámer podporila tvarovou čistotou, ľahkosťou línií a materiálu, pričom sa inšpirovala hnutím Art Deco. Výsledná farebnosť - biela a zlatá - podporuje slávnostný pocit večera.

Na prvú skúšku priniesla Andrea už "živú" skicu šiat vytvorenú zo skúšobného materiálu (tak krásneho, že dojem bol hneď na prvú ohromujúci, a keby náhodou išli na vyhodenie, hlásim sa o ne, ha).

For the first meeting, Andrea brought in a "live" sketch of the dress from a trial material (which was so beautiful that the first impression was unforgettable. And in case it should ever by discarded, I am here to adopt, ha).

At the second meeting the skirt part of the dress got adjusted to measure and a nude body got shaped and fitted - it will be the invisible skin, hidden under a top which will be baring Adela's back.

Na druhej skúške sa na mieru upravovala sukňová časť šiat a tvarovalo a pasovalo telové body, ktoré bude neviditeľnou druhou kožou, schované pod vrchom šiat, odhaľujúcich chrbát.

At the third meeting the shape of the dress started to come alive, showing the almost finished dress. The top part made of gold lurex with silk got added on. The overall shape of the dress got defined by  significant ripples on the front of the skirt. The idea here is that the dress will come alive, move and gently flow into one another with its owner.

Tretia skúška už naznačovala finálne tvaroslovie, s takmer hotovými šatami. Pribudla vrchná časť zo zlatého lurexu s hodvábom, a celkový tvar šiat zadefinovalo výrazné vlnovkové tvarovanie predku šiat. Predstava je, že pri pohybe budú šaty žiť a s ľahkosťou splývať s ich nositeľkou.

To accessorize and finish the look, Andrea has asked jewellery student Maňa Berec to join the process. Based on the golden colour of the top, its lightness, the open back and bare arms, Maňa has prepared the application of delicate golden chains that she has layered on the skin, including a statement neck piece (which we have all oohed and aahed over and tried it on, naturally).

Na dotvorenie celkového dojmu a stylingu si Andrea prizvala študentku šperku Maňu Berec, ktorá pripravila možnosti aplikácie pozlátených retiazok na telo a šaty. Vychádzala pri tom zo zlatej farby vrchu šiat, ich ľahkosti a odhaleného chrbta a ramien, na ktoré retiazky vrstvila, vrátane efektného kúska na krk (nad ktorým sme všetci slintani a skúšali si ho, samozrejme).

Fashion LIVE! 2015

This year I have tried to synchronize the third edition of Fashion LIVE! with my third month of motherhood. And since the baby is the boss, concering timing (and everything actually), altogether I have seen three shows. At night, after putting littleM to bed, I set off to Stará tržnica to see the last shows of the days.

Tretí ročník módneho podujatia Fashion LIVE! som sa tento rok snažila zladiť s tretím mesiacom materstva. A keďže čo sa týka časovania, bábätko je šéf, výsledok: tri prehliadky za tri dni. Večer, keď dieta spokojne spalo a otec strážil jeho nevinný spánok, som vyrazila do Starej tržnice si pozrieť vyvrcholenia prehliadkových dní.

The first evening it was Martin Hrča and his collection "From under the nests". The impressive colour-code of nature (sky blue, moss green and sunny to dark yellow) could have ended up quite kitschy in other hands, but in his interpretation it turned out to be a fairy tale collection. With artsy applications and layering typical for Martin's aesthetics, the atmosphere was underlined by a poetic styling. Even if after the show many have asked what the models were carrying on their heads. "Oh well, lumps," said Martin with a shy smile. (lump = hrča in Slovak)

Prvý večer to bol Martin Hrča a kolekcia Spod hniezd. Pôsobivá farebnosti prírody (blankytná modrá, machová zelená a žlto-hnedá) by mohla pri komkoľvek inom pôsobiť gýčovo, pod jeho rukami sa menila na rozprávkovú kolekciu, s prvkami ako výtvarné aplikácie a vrstvenie, typickými pre jeho cítenie. Atmosféru dotváral celkový poetický styling, aj keď po prehliadke sa viacerí pýtali čo to vlastne mali modelky a modelovia na hlave. "No predsa hrče," usmial sa Martin.

Boris Hanečka introduced the most extensive collection this year (created in collaboration with the designer Dana Voda), that carried sings of both their works. Dana specializes in knits and has been working for big brands like Escada. The collaboration with Boris happened gradually, over the summer, during meetings where the collection and the final styling was created. "I love new things. And I love collaborations because it is trough them that I discover new versions of myself," said Boris.

Boris Hanečka v spolupráci s dizajnérkou Danou Voda predviedol najrozsiahlejšiu kolekciu, ktorá v sebe skĺbila prvky od oboch dizajnérov. Dana sa špecializuje na úplety a roky spolupracuje s veľkými svetovými značkami typu Escada. Spolupráca s Borisom vznikala postupne, od leta, pri stretnutniach, na ktorých ju ladili - od tvorby modelov až po celkový styling. "Mám rád nové veci. A spolupráce ma bavia, pretože cez ne odhaľujem nové nové verzie môjho ja," povedal o spolupráci Boris.

The collection was full of beautiful details: fur on pockets, shoulders and coat sleeves, long arm gloves (that were seen in Boris' previous Paternoster collection), impressive head pieces and rich applications. Because of its richness, I sometimes got lost concerning the unifying theme of the collection, but the overall impression was grand.

Kolekcia bola plná krásnych detailov: kožušín na vreckách aj ramenách a rukávoch kabátov, dlhých rukávnikov, ktoré dopĺňali jednotlivé modely (a nadväzovali na Borisovu predošlú kolekciu Paternoster), efektných hlavových dekorácií aj bohaté aplikácie. V celkovej bohatosti sa pre mňa v určitých momentoch troška strácala jednotnosť kolekcie, ale celkový dojem bol veľkolepý.

On the third day I was looking forward to Marcel Holubec and his collection Delusion. With a light and sophisticated touch, Marcel followed up on his last year's collection, its lightness and sportiness, with a more distinct colouring and originals prints inspired by van Gogh (the prints were created in collaboration with puojd textiles). Stand out pieces were the straw hats and straw application, as well as interestingly cut shoulders on shirts and perforated leather pieces.

Tretí deň som sa vrámci večerných prehliadok tešila na kolekciu Marcela Holubca, Delusion. Marcel krásne nadviazal na ľahkosť a športovosť svojej minuloročnej kolekcie, s výraznejšou farebnosťou a pôvodnými potlačami inšpirovanými van Goghom (potlače vznikali v spolupráci s puojd textiles). Zaujímavá bola práca so slameným materiálom na klobúkoch aj šatách, ako aj výrazne strihané ramená košieľ a perforovaná koža.

The award for Best Designer went to Lenka Sršňová and her collection BonBon, that I didn't get to see, but you can see it here.
Overall, Fashion LIVE! this year has grown and added many accompanying activities on several locations, which points out the higher professionality in organization and overall growth. I wish the organizers next year a date that includes a weekend as well, that would fill the hall of Stará tržnica not only for the evenings, but during the day as well. The designers deserve it.

Ocenenie Best Designer Fashion LIVE! získala Lenka Sršňová s kolekciou BonBon, ktorú som bohužiaľ nestihla, vy si ju môžete pozrieť tu.
Celkovo sa podujatie Fashion LIVE! tento rok rozrástlo o bohaté sprievodné aktivity na viacerých miestach po meste počas aj pred konaním maratónu prehliadok v tržnici, čo naznačuje profesionalizovanie a rast podujatia. Organizátorom by som dopriala víkendový termín konania, ktorý by zaplnil Starú tržnicu nielen počas večerov, ale aj cez deň. Dizajnéri si to zaslúžia.

Maňa, Bratislava

I've met Maňa the first time four years ago at Pohoda festival, later she was part of the first series of women in white shirts. A talented student of jewellery design, she now studies in Prague and when I bumped into her in Bratislava, I loved the simplicity and shape of the coat worn just over the shoulders. Check out her wonderful work here.

Prvýkrát som Maňu stretla pred štyrmi rokmi na Pohode, neskôr bola jednou zo žien v prvej sérii košeľových fotiek. Študentka šperku momentálne študuje v Prahe, a keď som sa s ňou zrazila v Bratislave, oslovila ma jednoduchosť a silueta tvorená šedým kabátom s vyhrnutými rukávmi, prehodeným cez ramená. Jej krásne práce nájdete tu, páči sa.

Gabriela, Bratislava

Gabriela is a young painter, a student of arts (she totally looks like a painter in her beret with a brooch, right?) And she is one of the young artists whose paintings are right now exhibited in the windows of U Kubistu bistro, which is where I met her. Despite the different hair colour, you might remember her though from the first series of white shirt photos, here.

Gabriela je mladá maliarka, študentka maľby (aj tak úplne bohémsky vyzerá, v baretke s brošňou, nie?) Je jedným z mladých umelcov, ktorých diela sú práve teraz vystavené v jednom z výkladov bistra U Kubistu, kde som Gabrielu aj zachytila. Aj napriek zmenenej farbe vlasov si ju možno budete pamätať ešte z prvej série fotiek žien s bielou košeľou, tu aha.

People and living: Kristína and her family

She's the unofficial Slovak queen of stripes, the designer of her funny line of T-shirts and the mother of Ela and Matilda, the cute twins currently going through the defiance period. Together with her man, Juraj, they are hopeless romantics which translates into the interior of their duplex apartment. Here you find an eclectic mix of simple, practical IKEA furniture with nostalgic pieces like old chairs and porcelain, and old frames with family photographs. And stripes.

Je neoficiálnou slovenskou kráľovnou pásikov, autorkou vtipných tričiek pod značkou Koláčová a matkou Ely a Matildy, roztomilých dvojičiek, ktoré si práve prechádzajú obdobím vzdoru. Spolu so svojím mužom Jurajom sú vraj veľkí romantici, čo sa odráža aj na interiéri ich mezonetového bytu, kde sa mieša história a nostalgické kúsky ako staré stoličky, porcelán a rámy s rodinnými fotografiami s praktickou IKEA. A pásikmi.

The pictures on the wall are from Boris Farkaš, Kristína's father, who did the illustrations for Kristína's book "I'm a mum". It is coming out this week and is about... well, motherhood, but as seen through the eyes of a very funny, slightly sarcastic mother of twins. Personally, I am looking forward to it, some days that is exactly what I need. You can buy the book online here.

Na stene visia obrázky od Borisa Farkaša, Kristíniho otca, ktorý ilustroval aj celú Kristíninu knihu "Som mama". Tá vychádza tento týždeň, a je... o materstve, ale z pohľadu vtipnej, ľahko sarkastickej matky dvojičiek. Ja sa na ňu teším ako malá. Teda ako mama. Ten nadhľad je to, čo niektoré dni potrebujem.
